Grants

Grants from the Dr. Hari Sharma Foundation (HSF) are intended to support graduate studies, research and publication, cultural activities, and community events related to South Asia or the South Asian Diaspora. Grants are adjudicated by the HSF Board. Amounts typically range from $1,000 – $5,000, with a maximum of $10,000.

Application Process

1. Graduate Scholarship at Simon Fraser University for research related to South Asia or South Asian Diaspora

This Scholarship is administered by the Dean of Graduate Studies at Simon Fraser University. Applicants should consult the university calendar for the appropriate procedure.

2. Research & Publication Grants

Applications must include the following:

  • 1-3-page summary of the scope, purpose, and timeframe of the project, describing its benefit to South Asians and/or the South Asian diaspora.
  • 1–3-page CV for primary applicant(s).
  • List of at least two referees, including the senior supervisor, if the applicant is a graduate student.
  • Letter from one of the referees.
  • 1-page Budget, including total amount requested from HSF and any additional sources of funding.

3. ARTS & Cultural Grants

These may support film, theatre, visual art, music, dance, literary or mixed media activities with an expectation of public performance or dissemination. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Applications must include the following:

  • 1-3-page summary of the scope, purpose, and timeframe of the project, describing its benefit to South Asians and/or the South Asian diaspora.
  • 1–3-page CV for primary applicant(s).
  • Examples of previous work available through CD, DVD, website links, or Vimeo post with attached password.
  • 1–2-page Budget, including total amount requested and any additional sources of funding.
  • Letters of support (optional).

4. Social & Community Grants

Applications must include the following:

  • 1-3-page summary of the scope, purpose, and timeframe of the project, describing its benefit to South Asians and/or the South Asian diaspora. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Priority will be given to community events taking place in British Columbia.
  • 1–3-page CV for primary applicant(s).
  • 2 references, preferably including letters of support.
  • 1-2 page Budget, including total amount requested and any additional sources of funding.
